What is scale length?

Despite anything our Musical Director might suggest, "scale length" is not how long you practise arpeggios!

The scale length of a guitar is the distance from bridge to nut, shown in the photo in red.

 

A conventional classical guitar is nearly always 650mm though there are variations - some of the big Ramirez Concert guitars come in at 664mm and some Senorita models are just 630mm.

There is a slight variation in the nut width to match the change in fingerboard length.

In a Niibori guitar orchestra, the change is scale length across the instruments is not as great as the change in pitch of the guitars, which means that the smaller instruments have thinner strings than a classical guitar, and the larger instruments have heavier strings.
