Turlough O’Carolan, the blind Irish Harpist, wrote some of the most gorgeous Celtic melodies - pieces that still delight today.
Here are 3 contrasting pieces, each beginning with the word “Planxty” - the meaning of which is still the subject of some debate, but there’s evidence to suggest that the Publishers added the title when they were unsure of the full name of the person to whom the piece was dedicated.
- Planxty Irwin is a sedate piece with simple but rich harmonies
- Planxty George Brabazon is much more stirring - almost march-like in its pace
- Planxty Sir Festus Burke is a masterpiece of busyness - a real crowd-pleaser
Together they make a wonderful suite for a concert, gradually lifting the mood and pace from piece to piece. In each piece, the 3 guitar parts range in complexity from early intermediate to intermediate, so there’s something for everyone.
