Tchaikovsky's Chanson Triste - originally for piano - makes a lovely reflective concert piece, and gives an inexperienced ensemble wonderful opportunities to incorporate articulation and off-the-beat playing in return for hearing lovely chromatic harmonies which are all under the fingers.
The standard is early-intermediate and the piece works well with 5 guitars or in a large ensemble. Guitar 5 is tuned to 6=D, and Guitar 1 is a little more complex (to suit a teacher or a strong player in a mixed ability ensemble).
My other arrangements of this haunting piece are...
- A Guitar Trio version of Chanson Triste for intermediate guitars
- A Flute & Guitar version of Chanson Triste for intermediate players
- A Bb Clarinet & Guitar version of Chanson Triste for intermediate players
