If there was one piece of music that showed the true extent of Michael Jackson’s musical prowess, it would surely be "Ben", sung faultlessly and with great maturity at such a tender age.
My arrangement for clarinet and guitar is one tone lower than the original, because the original key requires the clarinet to cross the break over and over again, right at the most poignant part of the chorus. This edition contains two clarinet parts - one in the husky chalumeau register, with just a few notes in the clarion register - the other is an octave higher - more like the original - and sits in the clarion register with just one note in the altissimo register.
The combination of clarinet and guitar makes a wonderfully haunting and moving sound that an audience will most certainly enjoy.
- I've also arranged Ben for flute and guitar
- and a very playable version of Ben for 3 guitars
- plus Ben for 2 guitars (more complex and the parts swap roles each verse)
