A Walk In The Black Forest - Guitar Trio

Walk In The Black Forest - 3 Guitars

This is one of those timeless pieces that has a habit of going round your head for days after you’ve heard it. Mind you, that makes it perfect for a concert encore - the audience will be humming it all the way home.

My arrangement is in the same key as the original (D) and it will be a relief to most guitarists that it doesn’t modulate to Eb like the original!

The principal challenge is in the speed of the piano & orchestra version, though the mellow sound of the guitar does mean that a slightly slower performance sounds less frantic but still every bit as full of energy.

My version has only 2 verses (though it’s easy to repeat the section from B to F to add a third verse), but at the marked metronome speed the piece seems just the right length.
Some of the up-the-neck notes can be taken an octave lower - in a large ensemble any mix of octaves will work, but in a trio it’s important that Guitar 2 stays below Guitar 1 so the tune can carry. The syncopated ending has been simplified a little, so it doesn’t trip people up.

Different players will have different views about whether to stay up the neck or move when it suits, so I have not covered the music in fingering that might not help some players.

For those reading from paper (rather than tablet), there are generous margins on the pages, meaning that some sticky tape over the joins will result in a set of pages that won’t fall off a music stand.
