Whether you like the Gene Wilder film, or perhaps the Timothée Chalamet film, this is a lovely, lovely piece that is full of rich and unexpected harmonies.
I’ve chosen a key that avoids many of the open strings (which can inadvertently add brightness where it isn’t needed), and each of the parts has musical interest and simple rhythms that lock together to create a lush sound with gentle forward motion.
There are two sets of phrases marked “optional” that are included in the Gene Wilder version, but which you might feel aren’t needed in your performances.
The tempo is deliberately leisurely to recreate the almost whimsical pace of the original, and there are ample places where a little rubato will add to the magical sound.
