Menuhin Room - RIP 2003

The Menuhin Room was designed specifically for intimate Concerts.

Situated on the top floor of the Norrish Central Library, it offered a quiet, contemplative atmosphere close to, but at the same time, far removed from the bustle of the city outside.

With sound proofing, acoustic tiles and a magnificent Steinway Grand Piano, it was just the ticket.

Which is probably why it's no more.

In the blink of an eye that is the gap between the Portsmouth Music Festival 2003 and the same event in 2004, it was rebranded as the Third Floor Arts Centre and Menuhin Theatre.

It's easy to understand Yehudi Menuhin's connection with an intimate concert hall. Less so with an Arts complex, but there we are - that's progress for you.

The plush seats are no more, and the slight resemblance between this and a funeral parlour is not lost on those who preferred a concert venue...
