More on tuning the guitars - FAQ

An orchestra is only in tune as accurately as the worst-tuned guitar, and so hago tune up frequently.

A combination of factors mean that our alto guitars are the ones that require most attention. These factors include

  • Thinner strings

  • Higher pitch - making beat notes between altos more obvious

  • Higher pitch - making the altos themselves more exposed in the sound canvas

  • String material - some manufacturer's strings are more stable in temperature gradients than others, and there is a limited range of alto strings to choose from

In order to tune quickly and discreetly, hago uses a number of Intellitouch tuners, which work by contact, and allow all the players to tune at the same time.

Being fully chromatic, there is nothing to "fiddle with" when tuning the alto or bass guitar.
